Track daily habits with manual tallies

A habit counter works well for a repeated action you want to record with a tap. Decide whether the number represents today’s activity or a running total before using it.

How to do it

  1. Choose a countable action

Use specific labels such as Reading sessions or Walks completed. Set Count Up, starting value 0, and step 1 for one tap per completed action.

  2. Choose a time window

Name the board Today if you plan to reset it daily, or Total if you want to keep accumulating.

  3. Put the tally where you use it

Keep the board in the app, add its Home Screen widget, or make a Shortcut for a named counter. Test one increment.

  4. Close the time window

Record any daily result you need before resetting. Reset manually, or build and test a deliberate Reset Counter Shortcut.

Example: a reading tally

  • Reading sessions: start 0, step 1.
  • Tap after each session you have defined for yourself.
  • Three taps mean three recorded sessions, not an automatically measured duration or streak.

Illustrative setup; use your own labels and starting values.

A small board you can keep using

Begin with one or two actions rather than a dozen counters. A large tile and a short label make a check-in easy. Add more only when you have a clear reason to record them.

An Enter Number counter can replace a daily total you counted elsewhere. A Count Down counter can represent tasks remaining from a chosen baseline.

Daily totals need a daily boundary

KeepCount does not reset a habit at midnight on its own. If you configure a Shortcuts automation, verify its target and schedule, and make sure it will not erase a total before you record it.

Pro history records counter changes but does not create a habit calendar, a streak chart, or a progress guarantee. Use another record when those views are part of your routine.

Common questions

Will KeepCount send a habit reminder?

No reminder feature is advertised in the public app. You can use your usual reminder tools alongside a manual tally.
