Customize counter labels, colors, and layout

Use the gear to turn a board into a layout you can recognize quickly. Larger tiles suit frequent taps; labels identify the count even when colors look similar.

Layout editing and colors are free. KeepCount 1.7 uses a finer adaptive grid and preserves existing layouts.

How to do it

  1. Enter layout editing

Tap the gear. Use the plus button to add a counter in available space.

  2. Edit a tile

Tap a counter to open its editor. Set a short label, choose a preset color or Custom Color, and save with the checkmark.

  3. Arrange the board

Move counters and use their resize handles to adjust their area. The layout snaps to the grid. Finish editing with the toolbar checkmark.

Design for the next tap

For an admissions board, make Arrivals the largest tile and Corrections a separate, clearly labeled counter only if you actually need it. For two players, use a balanced layout so both scores are equally visible.

Leave enough room for labels and large values. A label that fits on the full-screen board may disappear in a small widget. Prefer short names such as Team A or Boxes to a sentence.

Check the screen you will use

Rotate the device and check that the counters remain usable. The layout adapts to the screen, so the available physical tap area differs between an iPhone and iPad.

Home Screen widgets need enough space for interactive tiles. A dense board can be comfortable in the app but too cramped in a small widget; choose a larger widget or simplify the board.

Keep a useful layout for later

Duplicate a finished board instead of rebuilding it for every session. Copy Layout & Labels when you want the same organization with counts returned to each counter’s starting value.

Removing a counter leaves its area blank. Undo can recover a recent in-app deletion while its undo action is still available; it is not a backup you can use after reinstalling the app.

Common questions

Does changing a color change what a tap does?

No. Counter Type and Increment by control the numerical behavior; color is a visual cue.
